Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) approached SEEDA during
2006 with a request for funding support to help the Council bring
forward its redevelopment proposals for a new World Class
Convention Centre for the city. The proposals for a new convention
centre form part of a wider retail-led mixed use development to be
delivered in partnership with Standard Life Investments as owner of
the adjoining Churchill Square shopping centre, as well as bringing
forward a new 4* plus Headquarters hotel integrally linked to the
new convention centre. The total value of the completed scheme is
projected at c. £400m
GENECON led the preparation of a detailed Green Book appraisal
of the proposal for SEEDA to invest £18.5m in the new convention
centre and the project was taken through a detailed scrutiny
process through BIS and IDAB (Industrial Development Advisory
Board) committees in March 2008. GENECON led the preparation
of all reporting and presentation documents. The Credit Crunch then
intervened and as yet the scheme's delivery remains on hold.
